Mendocino National Forest invites the public to participate in upcoming National Trails Day events across the forest to celebrate trails and promote trail stewardship. National Trails Day was established by the American Hiking Society in 1993 and occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. It brings together federal land managers, partners, and volunteers to celebrate trails and accomplish trail stewardship projects to ensure they are safe, well-maintained, easy-to-follow and accessible. Saturday, June 6, 9:00am to 4:00pm, Sunset Campground. Join Upper Lake recreation staff for a trail maintenance and volunteer project. Meet at the Sunset Campground for check-in and safety briefing. Volunteers will be clearing trails and re-establishing trail tread on a ½ mile nature loop at Lake Pillsbury. What to Bring Volunteers should arrange for their own transportation to the event. Most forest roads are native surface or dirt roads, so a high clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended. Bring lunch, plenty of water, and snacks. Gloves, sunscreen and a hat are also recommended. Some forest trails may be steep, rough, uneven or have downed trees. Long sleeves and closed-toed boots are recommended. Weather conditions can change unexpectedly, so please check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. Forest Service staff will provide hand tools and hardhats.
