Description

Gravitational Waves Dr. Stephen Pollaine
Saturday July 23rd Taylor Observatory  Oak Hills Ln., Kelseyville
7:30 PLANETARIUM SHOW
8:00 LECTURE: Gravitational Waves
9:00 PLANETARIUM SHOW
9:00-11:00 TELESCOPE VIEWING (weather permitting)
Just two days after the Valley Fire, gravitational wave detectors in the states of Washington and Louisiana both detected the signal of coalescing black holes 1.3 billion light years away. For a brief moment, the black holes released more power than all the stars in the universe combined. Steve Pollaine will explain the significance of the detection, and show how it complements traditional astronomy. This may lead to our best chance of observing the effects of quantum gravity. Dr. Pollaine has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from U.C. Berkeley, and a B.S. from Yale. He worked for 31 years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in fusion energy research. He is now retired in Occidental, giving talks and playing the piano for art galleries, restaurants, and farmer’s markets. Admission: $5.00 adults, Lake County Students, No Charge.
